The Grassland

Level:
1-4
Type:
Outside
Location:
Outside town gate
Mobs:
rabbits, herds

The grasslands is the first place you'll visit after leaving town. It it located right outside the gate, and has wandering rabbits and animal herds. Quests will bring you here from the start, and you can get some initial levels and equipment by wandering around and killing the mobs.

Be careful of wandering out of the zone accidentally, because nearby zones can have aggressive mobs. Also be careful with the human herders, as they can be equipped with different weapons, so just because you killed one easily doesn't mean the next will go down the same way. (The "consider" command will take this into account.)

It is a jailing offense to "summon" high level mobs into the grasslands, although you may find some people "playing" in the Sod House in the northeast area.

The main town is the gate in the lower right-hand corner ("G"). The "Sod House" is (S), the "Rock Pile" is (R), and a small group of trees is (T). The Hero clan house is in the southeast corner— going north below enters, but south from above does not. Most of the grasslands use 2 moves per step, but the orchard in the southwestern area is 3.

The two kinds of mobs generally found in the grasslands are cottontail rabbits (which will be found everywhere, but are most prevalent here), and herds. Herds will wander the grasslands as a group, with the animals following a human herder. The human will usually be armed with a basic weapon and maybe a little armor. Each mob type in a herd protects the one smaller than it, so a ram will get mad if you attack an ewe, and the shepherd will get mad if you attack a ram, etc.

You will also occasionally find mobs from nearby zones at the edges, such as a wolf that has wandered in from the woods to the west. Be careful, some of them are aggressive and attack on sight.

Try to kill the herds from biggest to smallest to prevent aggro. Be careful; the humans in charge of the herds wield basic weapons, but some of them can hit low-level players harder than they expect. Level 1-3 should "consider" herders before attacking.

Claiming this zone requires having claimed all other non-annex zones first.
